A new, less invasive laser treatment for presbyopia has arrived in Australia and is being marketed as an alternative to reading spectacles. Ophthalmologists in Sydney performed the nation’s first Intracor procedure in October. It is claimed that the 20 second procedure reshapes the cornea without damaging the eye’s outer layers. Dr Kerrie Meades, Medical Director of personalEYES eye laser surgery clinic, and refractive, corneal and cataract surgeon; described Intracor as a ‘breakthrough’ as almost everyone with vision impairment from presbyopia could reduce or eliminate their dependence on spectacles or contact lenses, although it may not be suitable if they have other conditions. Anna Ocysek was more cautious. Anna is an Optometrist and the National Optometry Liaison and education manager for LaserSight. ‘As far as I’m aware the treatment has worked well for some patients overseas but it is still early days. It has limited application at present and, in my opinion, is not the holy grail of presbyopia treatment. So far it looks positive from the point of view of less regression, minimal risk of infection an the reported ability to retain better distance acuity in the reading eye,’ she said. More than one billion people have presbyopia worlswide, including 1.7 milion in Australia. Your Options Eyecare optometrist can give you more information. 1.Aust. Opt. Vol 31 No. 11 Nov 2010 : 11
